Trinity makes a broad and diverse range of investments in order to support a broad and diverse range of mission activities across the world. These include: ministry, affordable housing, education, direct services, community facilities, spiritual formation, grants, Program Related Investments, and cultural programming.. Through its Grants & Mission Investing Department (GMI), Trinity invests in grantees (NGOs, dioceses and churches) locally, nationally and internationally to advance their work and Trinity?s strategic priorities. In 2018, Trinity identified five strategic areas of mission focus: The Trinity Commons Parish Center; Housing and Homelessness; Racial Justice; Leadership Development; and Mission Real Estate Development. As Trinity continues to define the initiatives in each of these areas, it expects its grants and mission investments to reflect those priorities.. Trinity?s Grants & Mission Investing team currently includes 11 staff and is growing significantly. The annual Grants & Mission Investing budget is also expected to grow considerably over the next several years.. POSITION SUMMARY. Since its founding, Trinity has identified, developed and formed leaders. Across the world, two big challenges church leaders face are the formation of new leaders for a changing world and resourcing their ministry. Given Trinity?s long history of experience in both these areas, Trinity has embraced these challenges in its strategic plan.. Trinity works with global partners to identify both ordained and lay leaders of the current and next generation and to create and support institutions, networks, programs, curricula, scholarships, fellowships, and other practical tools to equip and empower these emerging leaders. In consultation with the Rector, Vestry, Senior Clergy and Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Managing Director will: develop a set of ambitious goals and objectives to advance this initiative; oversee and advance existing programs; and develop a new global infrastructure and one or more robust, large-scale international partnerships with value-aligned organizations to develop ordained and lay leaders.. The Managing Director will report to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and supervise the Senior Program Officer. Other Leadership Development team members will be added as the Grants & Mission Investing team grows.. KEY AREAS OF ONGOING RESPONSIBILITY. The Managing Director will be expected to fulfill the following duties:. Strategy and Execution. In consultation with the Rector, Vestry, Senior Clergy and Chief Philanthropy Officer, develop and refine a set of strategic goals and objectives for Trinity?s global leadership development initiative.. Integrate the various components and tools of the leadership development initiative into a coordinated and coherent strategy and collective identity.. Lead the development of one or more large-scale global partnerships that can be a signature program for Trinity?s leadership work.. In close partnership with the Senior Clergy, lead the development of a global network of leaders and develop the convenings, convocations, trainings, retreats, debates, and digital networks needed serve as gathering points for Trinity-trained leaders to interact and engage in peer learning.. Deploy and integrate multiple tools to achieve impact, including advice, partnerships, investing, grants, convening and moral leadership.. Identify additional opportunities for impact and test those opportunities against strategy.. Set clear measurement indicators. Respond and adapt to the information they provide.. External Engagement and Partnership. Identify emerging leaders across geographies and assess partnership opportunities with vision, discernment, and political savvy.. Identify and implement global convenings and other forums and events to gather current and emerging leaders.. Strategically identify potential grantees and scholarship/fellowship recipients, rigorously assess grant proposals and manage grantee relationship throughout the lifecycle of a grant or Program Related Investment.. Seek and build partnerships that can increase impact and leverage expertise and additional resources for Trinity?s mission real estate capacity work.. Develop and maintain relationships with other grant-makers and philanthropic peers.. Manage consultants with skill and finesse, ensuring high performance and accountability.. Publicly represent Trinity?s leadership development activities, including deep engagement with churches and other partners throughout the world.. Internal Engagement and Team Culture. Serve as a member of the senior leadership team for the Grants and Mission Investing department and work closely with the other GMI managing directors to identify opportunities for collaboration, especially where a leadership focus can advance other strategic initiatives.. Co-lead work with senior priests to ensure key relationships within the Anglican Communion are maintained and built and inter-church dynamics are recognized.. Liaise with finance, legal and other teams within Trinity to ensure both impact and compliance.. Liase with Trinity Retreat Center and facilities team to leverage Trinity?s physical assets for convening and leadership development.. Contribute to an entrepreneurial work environment and positive culture of high impact, focused on outcomes.. Build a team that is adaptable and flexible.. Ensure that all work is approached with rigorous execution and the highest standards of ethics, aligned with Trinity?s core values.. IDEAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS. Ideally, the Managing Director will have the following experience and qualifications:. Leadership Formation. A deep understanding of the process of leadership formation across cultures and geographies is essential.. Knowledge of the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion and a strong understanding of the dynamics presented by Trinity being a religious institution are highly desirable.. Substantive knowledge of theological worldviews with a similar underlying leadership structure and practice, culturally calibrated, is desirable.. Program Development, Management, and Collaboration. At least 10 years successful experience developing, launching, and leading complex and international leadership, scholarship, fellowship or degree programs.. Significant event planning and management experience, from intimate gatherings to global convenings.. Successful experience leading people, with proven ability to supervise and develop staff and work effectively across teams.. Proven ability to take initiative, manage multiple projects, and balance competing priorities.. Ability to manage projects across multiple geographies, cultures and time-zones.. Ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability, and allocate resources appropriately to achieve results.. A strong collaborative and consensus-building orientation and experience, a high tolerance for ambiguity, the ability to adapt quickly to change, successful experience working with people from a range of national, cultural, social, economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.. Sound judgement and the ability to make complex, multidimensional decisions based on both facts and experience.. Grant-making experience and Program Related Investment experience are very desirable but not required.. Communications. Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including superior listening and exemplary writing skills and the ability to communicate Trinity?s mission and vision in highly compelling ways that engage and motivate diverse stakeholders, including other churches, partners, and allies.. Experience representing an organization in a variety of settings, ranging from intimate to high visibility.. Ability to communicate in a culturally appropriate way in many different countries and cultures.. Additional Experience and Qualifications. Experience operating in a global context, ideally in Africa, Latin America and Caribbean.. The ability to discern the nuances of relationships and power dynamics combined with respect for community needs and desires.. Experience gained in the context of an organization that has experienced rapid growth is especially valuable.. Bachelor?s Degree or equivalent required; Master?s degree in a relevant field is preferred.. Ability to travel up to 25% of the time (domestically and internationally)..
